flypaper screens (not)

In the days gone by when I was growing up, we had no screens in the windows and doors of our house. You can imagine how we were annoyed by flies in daytime and mosquitoes at night. One flycatcher we had were streamers of flypaper handing from the ceiling over the big table to trap the flies on the sticky paper. We also had fans and fly swatters to swat the dickens out of them. Mosquitoes were a night problem. I don't recall that we had any spray for (the days before inventions) the bugs. We had nets over the beds and if there was the tiniest hole in the netting, a big hungry mosquito would crawl and spend the rest of the night torturing you unless you covered your head with the sheet and then you could hear its song (droning and not a bit jazzy).

   Bye for now
